When commonly used, grotesque means strange, fantastic, ugly or bizarre, and is often used to describe distorted forms such as gargoyles. The grotesque forms on buildings which are not used as drain spouts are referred to as grotesques.

It is believed that these forms were used on structures to ward off evil spirits. It is also said thay were used in the architecture of early churches to lure in pagan worshipers.
